Operating Systems ( 2 of 2)

Opposite is a diagram showing the various mainframe Operating Systems. z/OS, z/TPF, z/VSE. and z/VM all have their roots in the 1960s,

z/VM, developed from VM, is the 1960s software which provided the only means of virtualisation prior to PR/SM.

z/OS is IBM's flagship Operating System used by most mainframes, whereas z/VSE was intended for smaller systems.

What about zTPF?

IBM has tested both Redhat and SuSe versions of Linux on z/Architecture.

What is less well know is that thanks to Blade Servers, Windows Server can also be hosted on the mainframe.
